SONGS YOU MUST HEAR BEFORE YOU DIE, Nº 3
MAZZY STAR - INTO DUST
Writer: Hope Sandoval, David Roback
Album: So tonight that I might see (1993)
Red Hot Chili Peppers front man Anthony Kiedis had fallen off the wagon after years of sobriety. In “Aeroplane” he sang: “I’m turning into dust again / My melancholy baby, the star of Mazzy, must push her voice inside of me.” The lines referenced Hope Sandoval, and the saddest song she ever sang.
Sandoval was customarily reticent about her inspiration for the lyrics. Around that time, however, she was living with William Reid of The Jesus and Mary Chain. Tellingly, Reid recalled the relationship as “an act of self-destruction—two messed up people clinging to each other.”
